Putting Your Business First: Why Website Redesigns are Essential to Growth

If I was a cobbler, my kids might not have any shoes.

As a creative director, this is the first thing that came to mind when I finally decided to revamp my website, which was about to become outdated.

Each of us has a unique skill set. The lucky ones – we get to use our skills in our work and create businesses that revolve around our talents and passions.

Too often though, we’re so busy using our talents to serve our customers, we don’t give ourselves the time or space to use our skills for our own businesses.

But here’s the truth: Marketing your business and reserving time for your own affairs is key to continued success. It's one thing to know this, but a different thing to act on it.

In this post, I’m diving into one element of business that needs your attention regularly – your website – and why regular redesigns are essential to your business's continued growth.

Technology and design trends are always evolving, websites have, on average, a 3-year shelf life.

With an outdated website, customers will assume your products and services are also out of date, and they might look elsewhere. Your website is a reflection of your business, and it’s often the first impression you make on a potential customer.

Be sure your site is up-to-date on who you are as a business, as your business evolves and improves over time. Your branding and marketing strategies will change. Your message will transform over time. Is your website keeping up with these changes?

Keeping user experience in mind

Whether we’re conscious of it or not, as internet users, we notice when a site is out-of-date. As design trends change, we notice the sites that aren’t keeping up because the way we experience them is different.

The experience your customers have when they seek out information on your site not only affects the way they see and feel about your brand; it also has a concrete effect on SEO, your site’s search engine optimization.

Google algorithms can pick up on the kinds of experiences people are having when they visit your website. Do they linger on different pages because they enjoy your content? Do you click around and explore your site? Or do they arrive, poke around quickly, and leave?

According to Blue Corona “38 percent of visitors will stop engaging with a website if the content or layout is unattractive.”

Similarly, according to IMPACT, “a site that is tough to navigate, has slow load times, or is unnecessarily complex can leave a bad taste in your visitor’s mouth and cost you valuable leads. In fact, 88% of online consumers are less likely to return to a site after a bad experience.”

Redesigning your website every few years helps your business stay aligned with the latest design trends, which enhances the experience a user has visiting your site, increasing your SEO and delighting your customers in turn.
